Measured from the sea floor

Most of Mauna Kea is under the sea. Measured from the ocean floor around it, it rises 9,330 m (30,610 ft), more than Everest’s 8,848.86 m (29,032 ft) above sea level, which is why some call it the tallest mountain on Earth from its base.

Where the base starts is loosely defined, so the figures differ: about 9,966 m (32,696 ft) down to the deepest point of the Hawaiian Trough, and 17,205 m (56,447 ft) down to the mountain’s root deep underground. Only 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) stands above the sea.
