Choose the measurement your landmark question needs

Height measures a vertical distance from a stated base. Elevation measures a point above a datum such as sea level. Keep the starting point with the number: Everest’s elevation is not its base-to-summit height.

A mountain needs a starting point

An elevation column starts at sea level and ends at the summit. A base-to-summit height starts at a chosen local base, which may be below the ocean or above sea level. Prominence is another measure: the rise above the saddle connecting a summit to higher terrain.

Use elevation against elevation when asking which summit is higher above sea level. The Denali and Everest comparison uses that shared starting point. It does not compare how far a climber ascends.

A building needs an ending point

Architectural height may include a spire while excluding equipment such as an antenna. Roof height and the highest physical tip can differ again. Read the selected measurement’s qualifier before subtracting two values.

A building beside a mountain elevation can show the scale of the two numbers. It cannot answer which object is physically taller unless both measurements use the same definition.

Keep the diagram linear

A person beside a tower becomes very small on a shared scale. Zoom changes the view without enlarging the person relative to the tower. Labels remain readable even when the body outline is tiny.

The outlines are symbols. Only their vertical extent is measured; widths, slopes, silhouettes and distances between figures are illustrative.
