Which bed size fits your height?
At 6 ft 2 in: a Twin or Full (74.5 in) is 0.5 in longer than you; a Twin XL, Queen or King (79.5 in) is 5.5 in longer; a California king (83.5 in) is 9.5 in longer.
An example height: type yours over it, in feet and inches or centimeters.
| Size | Against your height | Width × length |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 0.5 in longer than you | 38.5 × 74.5 in (98 × 189 cm) |
| Twin XL | 5.5 in longer than you | 38.5 × 79.5 in (98 × 202 cm) |
| Full | 0.5 in longer than you | 53.5 × 74.5 in (136 × 189 cm) |
| Queen | 5.5 in longer than you | 60 × 79.5 in (152 × 202 cm) |
| King | 5.5 in longer than you | 76 × 79.5 in (193 × 202 cm) |
| California king | 9.5 in longer than you | 72 × 83.5 in (183 × 212 cm) |
Reading the sizes
A Twin and a Full are the same length, 74.5 in (189 cm): the Full is 15 in wider. A Twin XL, a Queen and a King are all 79.5 in (202 cm) long and differ only in width; two Twin XLs side by side are about as wide as a King (77 in against 76 in). The California king is the longest standard mattress, 83.5 in (212 cm), 4 in narrower than a King. Shared by two, a Queen gives each of you 30 in (76 cm) of width and a King 38 in (97 cm), about a Twin’s 38.5 in each; a California king gives 36 in (91 cm) and a Full 26.8 in (68 cm).
Lying down, you take up more than your height: your feet point down past your heels and the pillow sits at the head end, so a mattress only a little longer than you can leave your feet over the edge. The table says how much longer than you each one is; how much room you like is yours to judge.
Outside North America
In the UK and Ireland, beds go by the mattress they hold, sized in feet and inches: a small single is 2 ft 6 in × 6 ft 3 in (76 × 191 cm), a single 3 ft × 6 ft 3 in (91 × 191 cm), a small double 4 ft × 6 ft 3 in (122 × 191 cm), a double 4 ft 6 in × 6 ft 3 in (137 × 191 cm), a king 5 ft × 6 ft 6 in (152 × 198 cm) and a super king 6 ft × 6 ft 6 in (183 × 198 cm). From 6 ft 3 in tall, only a king or a super king is longer than you, and a mattress may legally be up to 2 cm off. Shared by two, each of you gets half the width: 27 in (69 cm) on a double, 30 in (76 cm) on a king and 36 in (91 cm) on a super king; a single is 36 in (91 cm) wide.
In mainland Europe, sizes are in centimeters and most beds sold across the continent are 200 cm (78.7 in) long; the widths sold most are 90, 100 and 120 cm for one sleeper and 160, 180 and 200 cm for two. Beds 210 or 220 cm long are often made to order, and the usual advice is 210 cm from 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) tall and 220 cm above 200 cm (6 ft 7 in). Shared by two, each of you gets half the width: 80 cm (31.5 in) on a 160 cm double, 90 cm (35.4 in) on a 180 cm double and 100 cm (39.4 in) on a 200 cm double; a single is 90 cm (35.4 in) wide.
In Australia, sizes are in centimeters too: a single is 92 × 188 cm, a long single 92 × 203, a king single 107 × 203, a double 138 × 188, a queen 153 × 203, a king 183 × 203 and a super king 204 × 204 cm. Every size but the single and the double is at least 203 cm (about 6 ft 8 in) long. Shared by two, each of you gets half the width: 69 cm (27.2 in) on a double, 76.5 cm (30.1 in) on a queen, 91.5 cm (36 in) on a king and 102 cm (40.2 in) on a super king; a single is 92 cm (36.2 in) wide.
Sizes: the International Sleep Products Association’s standard North American mattress sizes, as Wikipedia’s “Bed size” gives them; a maker’s mattress may run half an inch larger or smaller. The UK and Ireland’s are the National Bed Federation’s; Europe’s the widths pan-European retailers sell most, and its long-bed advice; Australia’s the sizes sold there; and North America’s longer, less common sizes, all from the same article as revised on 18 Oct 2026.
