Human height through time
Hominins of the Late Pliocene, 3.6 to 2.58 million years ago, stood about 4 ft 1.5 in (125.7 cm) on average. By the Middle Pleistocene, from 774,000 years ago, the average estimate had reached 5 ft 4.5 in (164.4 cm), and in the Late Pleistocene 5 ft 6 in (167.1 cm). Foragers of the last 10,000 years averaged 5 ft 3 in (159.9 cm).
Each figure is the average stature estimated from skeletons, men and women together, compiled by Will, Pablos and Stock (2017). The dashed lines are today’s average US man, 5 ft 9 in (175.1 cm), and woman, 5 ft 3.5 in (161.2 cm) (CDC, 2021–2023).
