Is any mountain taller than Everest?

No mountain has a higher summit above sea level than Mount Everest. K2 is second. A comparison from the local base answers a different question.

What the source actually establishes

Everest’s joint Nepal–China survey gives a summit elevation of 8,848.86 metres. The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department lists K2 at 8,611 metres, making Everest 237.86 metres higher by subtraction.

A mountain’s elevation starts at sea level. A base-to-summit height starts at a chosen local base, which may lie below the ocean. That is why claims about a mountain being taller than Everest must name the starting point.
