What a water bottle’s height measures

Bottles of the same size are not the same height: each brand blows its own shape. Royal Vendors, which builds vending machines and measures every bottle they must hold, lists eight brands of 16.9 fl oz (500 mL) water from 7.5 in (19.1 cm, Fountainhead) to 8.9 in (22.6 cm, Dasani), with Deja Blue at 8.7 in, Poland Spring and Evian 8.5 in, Kirkland Signature 8.2 in, and Ozarka and Virgin 8.1 in. They are 2.5 to 2.8 in (6.4 to 7.2 cm) across.

The larger sizes stand taller: Royal Vendors lists 20 oz (591 mL) Dasani at about 9 in (22.7 cm) and a 24 oz (710 mL) Poland Spring with a sports cap at 9.8 in (24.9 cm). A reusable 32 oz Nalgene Wide Mouth holds nearly twice a 16.9 oz bottle, yet at 8 1/4 in (21 cm) it is no taller, because it is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) across.
