What a Beagle’s height measures

The American Kennel Club measures height at the withers, the top of the shoulders. Its standard has two varieties: 13 inches and under, and 13 to 15 inches. The drawing uses the top of the larger variety.

Ranked by the tallest height its standard names (15 in), the Beagle is the joint 60th smallest of the 297 dog breeds on this site. See the smallest dog breeds ranked.

Drawn at the same 15 in: Red fox, Mudi and Kromfohrlander. Same drawing, different listings: a Beagle’s figure is the top of its range, a red fox’s, a Mudi’s and a Kromfohrlander’s each the lower end of its range.

This is a published species or breed reference, not a prediction for an individual animal. Where a range is supplied, both ends appear with the reading. Shoulder height and head height are kept apart when comparing animals.
