Will you fit? Car headroom, car by car
You have 2 in (5.1 cm) above your head in the 2026 Honda Civic Sedan without moonroof. In the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata soft top, sitting the same way, the makers’ figures give you about 0.1 in (0.3 cm): it has 1.9 in (4.8 cm) less headroom.
An example: choose the car you drive and type the room you have in it, sitting as you drive, from the top of your head to the roof lining, in inches or centimeters.
Front legroom: 43.1 in (109.5 cm) in the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata soft top, 0.8 in (2 cm) more than in your car: with the seat all the way back, about that much more room for your legs.
Of the other 3 sports cars here, none would leave you the 2 in you have now; the 2027 Dodge Charger Sixpack, with the most headroom of them, would leave you about 1.8 in.
Front headroom and legroom, the most headroom first
Of these, the 2026 Ford Bronco 4-door soft top gives the most room, 43.3 in (110 cm), and the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF the least, 36.8 in (93.5 cm). A sunroof or moonroof takes 0.3 in (0.8 cm) to 2.3 in (5.8 cm) of it. For legs, the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 6 gives the most room, 45.4 in (115.3 cm), and the 2026 Toyota Sienna the least, 40.3 in (102.4 cm).

What headroom and legroom measure
Carmakers all measure front headroom the same way, by the SAE’s “Motor Vehicle Dimensions” standard: from the seat’s hip point, with the seat in its rearmost normal driving position, along a line leaning 8° back from upright to the roof lining, plus 4 in (102 mm). It is a measurement of the car, not of anyone sitting in it, which is why the same figure can leave one driver room to spare and brush another’s hair.
Your height alone can’t tell you whether you fit: how long your body is from the seat to the top of your head, and how you set the seat, decide that. The room you have now is a better guide. Sit as you drive, with the seat where you keep it, and measure from the top of your head straight up to the roof lining; a ruler stood on your head works, or ask someone to hold a tape. Because every car is measured the same way, adding the difference in headroom between your car and another to that room estimates what you would have in the other car, sitting the same way.
It stays an estimate. The makers measure with the seat at its rearmost driving position, along that one line, and you may keep yours further forward or higher; the roof can also curve down closer to your head in one car than the other. Before you buy, sit in the car with the seat set as you would drive it.
A seat that goes lower, or leans further back, than the one you have can give back some of what a lower roof takes. A sunroof or moonroof is the other thing to check: in every car here whose maker gives its headroom both ways, the trims without one have more room.
Front legroom is measured by the same standard, from the seat’s hip point, with the seat all the way back, to your ankle with your right foot resting on the accelerator, plus 10 in (254 mm). More legroom means the seat goes further from the pedals, which long legs need; it does not change the room above your head.
Headroom and legroom: each car’s figures from its maker’s own specifications or press kit, linked from its name in the table; the way it is measured from SAE J1100, “Motor Vehicle Dimensions”. To set up a desk to your measurements, see desk height; for the bed that fits you, see the bed sizes.
